Introduction

Taking extended boating trips or leading a liveaboard lifestyle on the water means dealing with the hassle of drying clothes without the convenience of home utilities.

While solar-powered air dryers and manual wringing/spinning methods work in a pinch, they are inefficient and labor-intensive when drying loads of clothes.

Portable Clothes Dryers for Boats

For boaters seeking an easier solution, a portable clothes dryer can be an essential gear. Small, compact dryers that run on electricity provide a way to quickly and easily dry clothes, sheets, jackets and more while staying on the water. No more wringing out and hanging up clothes for hours on end or waiting days for clothes to air dry. A portable dryer can dry wet clothes dry and keep boaters comfortable on even the longest cruises.

With many affordable and durable options available, a portable clothes dryer can make boating more enjoyable and prevent laundry day blues. Whether drying clothes for a weekend trip or living aboard for years, a portable dryer is one of the most useful boating accessories any sailor can have. Keeping clothes and linens fresh has never been more convenient - or more necessary - than with the use of a reliable portable drying solution.

Benefits of a Portable Clothes Dryer on Board

There are several benefits to having a portable clothes dryer on your boat. They are listed below:

  1. Convenience and efficiency. Portable dryers save hours of wringing, hanging and waiting for clothes to air dry. You can quickly finish a load with minimal effort.
  2. Prevent musty smells. Keeping clothes, sheets and towels dry prevents the growth of musty odors that develop from being damp for long periods. A dryer keeps everything fresh smelling and clean.
  3. Deal with limited space. If space is at a premium on your boat, a dryer saves room by minimizing how much space wet or drying clothes take up. Everything stays contained in the dryer until ready to use.
  4. Extend beach and island stays. Not having to rush back to the boat to wring and hang wet suits or other items means you can relax on beaches and do more exploring on islands without being hurried along by your clothes drying needs.
  5. Accommodate seasonal changes. A dryer works equally well in any weather by providing constant, controlled drying performance. You can dry clothes just as easily in cold weather as hot, rainy weather. Seasonal changes won't impact your ability to keep clothes dry.
  6. Stay comfortable during long passages. On extensive sailing passages, crew members can remain comfortable by drying clothes, wet suits, socks, gloves and more promptly using a portable dryer instead of waiting for everything to air dry slowly.
  7. Ensure safety. In rough, unstable conditions, a dryer keeps sharp objects, cords and equipment securely contained and prevents tripping hazards that could exist with hanging clothes and lines. Everything stays stabilized.

Choosing the Right Portable Clothes Dryer

 Portable Clothes Dryers for Boats

Here are some tips for choosing the right portable clothes dryer for boating:

  • Energy source: Choose propane gas, electric or dual fuel depending on your needs and setup. Propane is more versatile but electric is more convenient. Dual fuel gives you flexibility. Make sure the fuel is available and practical for your boating.
  • Drum size: Choosing the appropriate capacity is crucial when space is limited on a boat. On the basis of meeting the daily washing needs of 1-2 people, it is advisable to choose compact equipments.
  • Safety features: Look for a tip-over shutoff switch, overload protection, grounded plug, stable base, lid switch (for vented models). These features prevent hazards and ensure safe operation.
  • Ease of use: Choose a dryer that is lightweight yet durable, with easy-to-use controls, locking wheels or legs for moving, and fold-up drying racks or cabinets for more capacity if needed. Easy setup and takedown are important for boating.
  • Price: Prices range from $200 up to $1000 or more depending on the brand, features and capacity. If on a budget, portable electric models start around $300-600. More heavy-duty, high-capacity or high-tech options will be on the higher end.
  • Warranty: Aim for at least a 1-year warranty for an expensive, complex appliance like a dryer. Check the details of coverage to ensure it will meet your specific needs.

Safety Tips for Using a Portable Clothes Dryer on Board

As with any electrical appliance, it's important to use a portable clothes dryer safely. Here are some tips to keep in mind when using a portable clothes dryer on board:

  1. Proper installation and ventilation: Ensure the dryer is properly installed and has adequate ventilation to prevent overheating and the accumulation of moisture.
  2. Secure the dryer: Make sure the dryer is securely fastened to the boat to avoid movement during rough conditions or while underway.
  3. Check power source and connections: Before using the dryer, double-check the power source and electrical connections to ensure they are in good condition and compatible with your boat's system.
  4. Keep the dryer clean: Regularly clean the lint filter and dryer interior to prevent fire hazards and maintain the efficiency of the dryer.
  5. Don't overload the dryer: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for load capacity, as overloading the dryer can cause it to overheat or become less efficient.
  6. Use caution with flammable materials: Avoid drying items that may have come into contact with flammable substances, such as gasoline or cooking oils, as they can create a fire risk.
  7. Monitor the dryer: Always stay nearby while the dryer is in use and never leave it unattended.
  8. Keep the area around the dryer clear: Ensure there is sufficient space around the dryer for proper airflow, and keep flammable items, such as towels or clothing, away from the dryer.
  9. Follow manufacturer's instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper use, maintenance, and safety precautions.
  10. Regularly inspect the dryer: Periodically inspect the dryer for signs of wear, damage, or potential hazards, and address any issues promptly to maintain safe operation.

Perfect for small housing living

I've had my morus since October 2022. It was a bit pricey, but so far worth every penny. It takes up minimal space, doesn't need venting and dries clothes as good as the apartment dryer that I have to pay to use, and I don't have to put my wash in a machine that others use. That right there made it worth the price!
I live in a one bedroom apartment, and purchased an apartment sized washer too. The washer has paid for itself many times over, and the Morus will in time also.
I am watching my electric bill to see if it is increasing with the Morus, but it's hard to tell in winter, I have electric heat.
Because it "vents" inside, it does create quite a bit of condensation. It does have a bit of rumbling noise when it starts up, but after start up it quietly hums.
I clean the lint catcher inside the drum after every load, and have cleaned the back once so far. I use a soft toothbrush for this and it grabs the lint quite well and I don't worry about poking a hole in the screens.
It is just me that I am doing laundry for, if I had another person, I'm not so sure this would be the best option. Between my tiny washer and tiny Morus, it takes me all day to do laundry just for me. I'm sure in the summer it will go faster, as with jeans and sweatshirts added to my dress slacks and sweaters for work, it takes time.
I can dry one queen sheet at a time, one body towel with washcloths added at a time, one hooded sweatshirt at a time, and quite a few shirts, socks and delicates at one time. I usually use the 60 minute setting and loads like the large queen sheets aren't quite dry after 60, but they never were in the paid apartment dryer either.
I use name brand liquid detergent, and softener in the washer, and add a dryer sheet in the Morus. I believe this most likely isn't good for breathing with it venting inside, but I'm still doing it....Maybe I'll try a dryer ball. The Morus is one of my best apartment purchases so far!

so far so good

I love the way it works and looks, really quick at drying clothes, it's a little noisy but then again dryers are. I've not attached a power meter to it yet but it didn't seem to use much electric while drying. Shame it hasn't got any smart features like a push notification maybe an idea for future versions. So far so good I will use it for quick drying of a single outfit/shoes needed urgently.

A must buy especially if you live in a small apartment or a some sort of camper. I have an appartement in Santa Monica California where everything is just extremely expensive, but I purchase this and let me tell you -you will never find a better product than this did tons of research I couldn't stop doing research and it's very difficult to find a small dryer in California or Los Angeles I don't know why But But this is the GREATEST!
I dry everything in seconds practically and perfectly done it's amazing thank you God for giving these engineers the wit to Create this genius contraption.
